Professor Mpine Makoe is the Commonwealth of Learning chair in Open Education Practices and Resources who worked on numerous commissioned research projects for Commonwealth of Learning, the British Council, the Council for Higher Education, and the International Council of Distance Education (ICDE) where she is also an OER Ambassador.
She is also Professor at the Institute for Open Distance Learning at the University of South Africa and the Executive Dean of the College of Education (with more than 100.000 students). As the director of the African Council of Distance Education (ACDE) she is responsible for coordinating and developing the continental distance education database. She also served as a higher education technical leader on the UNESCO’s Futures of Higher Education for the World Higher Education Conference (WHEC 2022) and as a member of the University of the Future Network. In addition Mpine has engaged in development of strategies and policies in ODeL and online learning in other universities and governments in Africa.
One main focus of her work lies in the area of educational technology focusing specifically on the use of mobile technologies in facilitating and supporting distance education students. Her other interests include staff development, learner support, quality, and policy formulation in Open Distance Learning. She has also done consultancy work for the Commonwealth of Learning facilitating the development of Open Distance Learning policies in different countries.
Mpine was honored as Women of the Year award and received the 2012 Women Developing Researcher Award. She was the president of the National Association of Distance Education Organisation (NADEOSA) and the founding member of the Global Doctoral Consortium for the International Council for Distance Education (ICDE).
